Mari Smith’s Generative AI Policy
Greetings Friends,
With the rapid acceleration of generative AI use in marketing today, I firmly believe we all need to be super transparent about how we are using this plethora of tools.
Synthetic media is flooding our social media feeds. As a result, trust is eroding.
More and more, people are being duped into believing content is real, when it’s fake.
In my 18+ career as a social media thought leader (primarily specializing in Facebook marketing), I have always said that I won’t the very first early adopter. But I will be among the first… only after I’ve thoroughly investigated, conducted deep research, tested out for myself and then I will feel empowered to share with my network.
I continue to investigate, test and iterate the use of AI and integration into various aspects of my organization. I have a sense of discomfort with some of the AI tools, specifically the ones that make it SO easy to crank out fake videos and deepfakes of other people.
As an entrepreneur and marketer, I have always had a deep commitment to relationships first. My connection with my fellow humans is at the core of everything I do. (My book, The New Relationship Marketing came out in 2011).
And, as I’ve been deeply immersed in my passion project of professional studies of the life-changing Human Design System since Winter Solstice 2020, I am eternally grateful for the inner peace and grounding this tool gives me. Regardless of the cacophony of technological changes happening ‘out there,’ I have an unwavering trust within my own sovereign being and my ability to make body-wisdom decisions that are not swayed by my own ‘monkey-mind’ that might want to try and ‘keep up’ with my peers.
Following is my own stance on how my team and I currently utilize generative AI tools in my corporation. I will keep this policy updated regularly, should there be any changes.
Mari Smith International, Inc. – Responsible AI Principles
- I believe with an absolute passion in taking a fully human-centered approach to AI that empowers real people.
- I believe that humans remain accountable for all decisions and actions, even when assisted by AI. Humans must remain in the loop in all AI applications.
- I believe in the critical role of human knowledge, experience, emotion, intuition, instinct and imagination in creativity, and my team and I seek to explore and promote emerging opportunities for creative professionals and small business owners.
- I believe in the power of the written word, images, audios and videos to educate, influence, and affect change. I commit to being fully transparent – with disclosures and watermarks – anywhere my team and I use generative AI technology.
- I believe that transparency in data collection and AI usage is essential in order to maintain the trust of my clients, community and partners.
- I believe in personalization without invasion of privacy, including strict adherence to data privacy laws, mitigation of privacy risks for consumers, and following my moral compass when legal precedent lags behind AI innovation.
- I believe in intelligent automation without dehumanization, and the potential of AI to have profound benefits for humanity and society.
- I believe in an open approach to sharing my own AI research, knowledge, ideas, experiences, and processes in order to advance the industry and society.
- I believe in the importance of upskilling and reskilling professionals, and using AI to build more fulfilling careers and lives.
- I believe in partnering with organizations and people who share my principles.
How I Use AI Today
While I am constantly experimenting with AI technologies to drive efficiency and performance across many business functions, my primary use cases today are in the generative AI space for marketing, productivity and courses. Specifically ideation, brainstorming, research, and image creation for my own social media programs, webinars, keynotes and other presentations.
I use a variety of Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) products for the following functions with current tools indicated in parentheses:
- Ideation (ChatGPT)
- Copywriting (ChatGPT)
- Outline generation (ChatGPT)
- Research (Google AI, ChatGPT, Perplexity)
- Content summarization (ChatGPT, Meta AI, Google Gemini)
- Summaries, Research & Learning Enhancements (NotebookLM)
- Speech-to-text transcription (Descript)
- Video editing (Descript, Instagram Edits)
- Image generation (ChatGPT, Meta AI, Canva, Google’s Nano Banana)
- Predictive text where relevant for emails and documents (Google Gemini)
- Visual design ideas (Microsoft Copilot)
